Data & disclosures
What our listings are based on, what they can and cannot tell you, and how we keep them accurate.
Directory information
Facility details can change and may be incomplete or outdated. Confirm access, hours, schedules, fees, and conditions with the facility before visiting.
Where listings come from
- An imported directory. Most listings come from an older court directory that we imported and keep as a preserved starting record. It is not refreshed automatically, and most of its listings have not been individually re-checked since import.
- Visitors and facility operators. Corrections, closures, and missing courts reported through our forms or by email. Each report is reviewed against evidence before anything changes.
- Area reviews. We review listings one area at a time against official sources. The first review covered Santa Barbara and Goleta, California, using facts read by hand from the City of Santa Barbara and City of Goleta facility pages. To find courts that might be missing or out of date, the review also compared our listings with open datasets: OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, and Overture Maps. Those comparisons only produce leads; nothing from them is published until it has been reviewed, and data whose license we cannot confirm is never used.
We do not copy listings, descriptions, or images from Google Maps, Street View, social networks, news sites, or other commercial directories. Court photos are shown only when we own them or have a license to use them.
What the listing fields mean
- Total, indoor, and outdoor courts
- The number of courts the listing reports. Outdoor courts are the total minus indoor courts.
- Facility type
- Public, private, club, or school, as recorded in the listing. Public usually means a city, county, or other government facility.
- Court configuration
- Dedicated means courts set up for pickleball only. Lined means pickleball lines on a court built for another sport, such as tennis. Shared means courts used by pickleball and another sport by schedule or by turns.
- Surface
- The playing surface recorded for the courts, such as hard court or wood floor.
- Lighting
- Whether the listing records court lights.
- Court or membership fees
- Whether the listing records a fee to play.
- Website and phone
- Contact details for the facility or its operator when known. They are often the best place to confirm current information.
- Hours, reservations, nets, and access notes
- Recorded only for the few listings where these details were taken from an official source during a review.
A field that does not appear on a listing is unknown, not absent.
Reading "Yes" and "No"
Imported listings recorded lights and fees only as Yes or No, with no way to say "unknown." A Yes means someone reported the feature. A No often means nobody reported it either way. That is why our guides describe facilities as "listed with lights" or "listed as free" rather than stating that they have lights or cost nothing, and why category pages group facilities by what their listings record. Directory totals and rankings count what listings report; they are not a survey of conditions on the ground.
How corrections and reviews work
Use Suggest an update on any listing page, or add a missing court. A reviewer checks the report against the evidence provided and, where needed, an official source or the facility itself. Reports never change a listing automatically. Accepted changes are recorded alongside the original import, so the original record and every later change are preserved. A closed facility is marked closed after review rather than deleted.
Commercial relationships
Paid relationships do not change the facility facts we publish. We do not sell listings or placement, and no facility pays to be listed or ranked. The site currently has no sponsorships, paid placements, advertising, or affiliate links. If any are added, they will be labeled where they appear and kept separate from listings and guides.
Data rights
Rights in third-party-sourced directory information remain with the applicable owners or sources. We do not offer the directory database for reuse.
Map coordinates for some reviewed listings come from Overture Maps Foundation data made available under the Community Data License Agreement – Permissive 2.0. Place boundaries used in area reviews come from the U.S. Census Bureau.
